ABOUT
MEGHALAYA
Meghalaya is literally the "Abode of the Clouds", a mountainous land wreathed with rain-filled clouds, with forested valleys, lush meadows and sparkling rivers. Meghalaya is bordered by Assam and Bangladesh and was declared the 21st state of India in 1972. It is inhabited by the
Khasis, Garos and the Jaintias who are well known for their unique
matrilineal society where the custodianship of the family and ancestral property is passed down the female line. Meghalaya has an
abundant wildlife and is particularly endowed with a flamboyant botanical diversity being home to
three hundred varieties of orchids and the exotic carnivorous Pitcher Plant.
The capital of Meghalaya, Shillong, "Scotland of the East", has been a popular holiday destination since the British started retreating there to escape the sweltering summer heat of the plains. Meghalaya offers something for all travellers - the leisurely pace of a hill station for those who want to relax as well as exciting opportunities for the more adventurous tourist.
