The maximum rainfall in a single day was recorded in 1876 when 1040 mm of rain fell in 24 hours. Cherrapunjee has a breathtaking, lush natural beauty and the journey begins at 7am. Our first stop is a historical Khasi village called Mylliem, home to traditional blacksmiths whose hand made locks are famous throughout the country. We then visit a typical colonial bungalow which is more than a hundred years old and is still believed to be haunted by its British owners ! Our journey then takes us to the Duwansingh Bridge which is the entrance to the Cherrapunjee tourist circuit and provides the first panoramic view of the lush green canyons of East Khasi Hills. There is a halt at the charming Khyllon Falls for photographs before proceeding to Cherrapunjee where we stop for lunch. After lunch, we proceed to Khoh Ramhah, the resting place of a legendary Khasi Giant. The imposing, cone-shaped single drop rock formation is said to be the Giant's fossilized basket. On the way to visit the Shiva Mandir in the village of Laityra, we make a short stop at Mawsmai Cave with its unique stalactite and stalagmite formations. The trip concludes with a visit to the majestic Nohkalikai Falls. |
