Mairang (40 kms) : Capital of the legendary U Tirot Sing Sylem, ruler of Nongkhlaw, who fought against the British to defend the "territorial integrity and cultural identity of the Hynniewtrep people" in 1829. He was ultimately captured and died in captivity in
1835.
Cherrapunji (56) kms : Locally known as Sohra and
located at a height of 1300 m, it is situated in the one of the most highly precipitated regions in the world. Set amid deep gorges and roaring waterfalls, the drive is picturesque. The town is known to be the "wettest place in the world", is also famous for its network of limestone caves, orange orchards. The oldest Presbyterian Church in the
North East is located here.
Mawsynram (56 kms) : Known for its giant stalagmite formations in the shape of a "Shivalingam", locally called "Mawjmbuin" closely rivals Cherrapunji in its annual
precipitation.
Jakrem (64 kms) : A popular health resort with hot sulphur
springs.
Nartiang (65 kms) : En route is Thadlaskein Lake which, according to legend was dug with arrow-heads by clan members of a rebel general of the Jaintia ruler. Today it is a beautiful picnic spot with boating facilities. Nartiang was once the summer capital of the Jaintia
rulers and is famous for its massive monoliths. A 500-year old
Durga Temple is another attraction.
Dawki (96 kms) : A picnic spot set amidst silver streams, this border town has magnificent views of the Khasi Hills and Bangladesh on the other. An added attraction is the colourful boat race that takes place every spring on the
Umngot River.
Ranikor
(140 kms) : An angler's paradise, especially for carp and
mahseer.
