Dawki is a village on the Indo-Bangladesh International Boundary Line and the warmer climate, luxuriant vegetation and arecanut trees are a pleasant contrast to the cooler climes and pine forests of Shillong. The two and a half hour trip to Dawki commences at 7am. Upon reaching Dawki we hop into a traditional canoe and row up the Umngot River ( an angler's paradise ) to reach a village called Shnonh Pdeng. This village lies at the confluence of three tributaries of the Umngot River.

An interesting feature of the inhabitants here is their dialect which is a blend of both Khasi and Jaintia. We gain an insight into the important position women enjoy in this state due to the unique matrilineal tradition with a visit to the High Priestess. We then take a short walk to explore a sacred grove and see a hanging bridge. Sacred groves and forests are a special feature of Meghalaya. They have spiritual significance and are treated with great reverence. This timeless preservation of the eco-system reveals the deep and harmonious relationship the people share with their natural environment. Lunch follows where we can indulge in some ethnic delicacies. We then head back for the canoe and glide the shimmering rapids back to Dawki.

We then journey uphill to Pyrnursla, a village famous for the high quality of its betel nut and betel leaf, where we stop for tea. We then head back to Shillong where we enjoy the magical night view as we conclude our trip.
