Shillong Cradled by pines, conifers, pineapple shrubs and meadows of heather - reminiscent of the Scottish highlands - Shillong is often referred to as "the Scotland of the East". The city derives its name from the presiding deity, Shyllong, who is believed to reside on the Shillong Peak overlooking this picturesque hill station. One of the earliest outposts of the British in the North East, today it is the capital of the state of Meghalaya (literally "Abode of the Clouds"). Home to the Khasi, Jaintia and Garo tribes, Shillong has always been a meeting point of traditional cultures and cosmopolitan styles. From golfing, trekking, water sports, angling to quiet picnic spots, breathtaking vistas, exotic flora and colourful festivals, Shillong has a lot to offer and has long been a favourite destination for tourists from both home and abroad. |
