Shillong : In Shillong Located in the heart of town, is Ward's Lake with its little isles and undulating grounds, flowerbeds and boating. Just below, is the Botanical Garden. Of special importance is the Orchidarium of the Botanical Survey of India. The 18-hole Golf Course is one of the oldest east of the Suez. Opened in 1889 with 9-holes, it is called the "Gleneagles of the East". The Golf Club retains its colonial ambience. About short way from the Polo Ground is a famous picnic spot - the Spread Eagle Falls. Behind the Shillong Civil Hospital are the manicured lawns of Lady Hydari Park which has a small museum and a mini zoo. Close by lies the Crinoline Falls (12 -13 m) at the base of which there is a swimming pool. Waterfalls abound in the area. Worth seeing are the Gunner's Falls 1 (24 -26 m) on the Upper Shillong Road, the Gunner's Falls 2, and the Elephant Falls - popular picnic spots with lovely scenic views. Beyond are the Upper and Lower Elysium Falls. Also of note are Beadon Falls and Bishop Falls which cascade down the same escarpment and flow into the Umiam River. The most beautiful of all are the Weitden or Sweet Falls (96m). To get a glimpse of the heritage and lifestyle of the Khasis, visit the State Museum, situated in the State Central Library Complex in Lachaumiere. But to get a first hand experience, a visit to the Iewduh Market, held in the heart of the city, is a must. Shillong is also famous for its churches. The most beautiful is the Cathedral of Mary Help of Christians in Laitumkhrah. Directly below the hill is the Grotto Church. Opposite the State Central Library is the all wood All Saints Church. |
